Genmaicha, literally "brown rice tea", is a Japanese green tea blended with roasted rice grains. Some roasted rice grains can burst and resemble popcorn. This is why genmaicha is sometimes colloquially referred to as "popcorn tea".
Originally drunk by the Japanese poor, the rice was used to reduce the proportion of tea in the blend and cut its price; today, it is drunk at all levels of society. This tea has a light yellow hue. Its taste is mild and pleasant, combining the fresh herbal flavor of green tea with the nutty flavor of puffed rice.
Genmaicha is also sold with matcha (powdered green tea) added to it.
This product is called matcha-iri genmaicha (literally genmaicha with tea powder).
Matcha-iri genmaicha tastes similar to genmaicha, but is often stronger in flavor and greener in color.
